Great Trail Girl Scout Camp News
On October 1st, 2009, use of the Great Trail Camp will be suspended for at least one full year. This Decision was made by the GSNEO board members earlier this year. Decision to suspend use of the camp was made and confirmed by the board of directors, while the rest of the Girl Scout community was left in the dark. While Great Trail Camp would be the only camp, after the closing of Lycopodia, in the Southern region, there is much to support the fight to keep it up and running.
Some main reasons leading to the suspension of Great Trail consist of: security, usage, safety and expenses to keep it in top physical condition. At the recent meeting, 7.23.09, a list of repairs and replacements needed for the camp was passed out to all in attendance. The estimated cost of general repairs needed for the camp total to approximately $80,000; as well as other repairs, replacements and additional items. While all the things listed are important to repair or replace, many things can be done simply by devoted members who are willing to volunteer their time and efforts. Therefore, eliminating much of the overall restoration costs.
This site is for all people interested in saving not only Great Trail, but other Girl Scout camps as well. For all to come and be informed with what is happening with the Great Trail Camp and with ways that you can help. Stay tuned for more information as it may arise.
Thank You!
